Abstract artist exploring organic geometries and material presence

GEOGRAPHIES OF THE LIVING — 2026

Geographies of the Living investigates the hidden architectures of growth.
Through raw canvas, absorbed pigments and evolving forms, the series traces imagined territories where geometry, matter and organic movement coexist.
Each work unfolds as a living landscape shaped by accumulation, transformation and chance.

APPROACH

My practice investigates how forms evolve between construction and emergence.
Working primarily on raw canvas through stain-based processes, I explore the tension between deliberate structure and material unpredictability. Geometry, organic movement, and spatial relationships intersect to create landscapes that appear simultaneously familiar and undefined.
Each work functions as a fragment of an invented geography, where growth, transformation, and memory become visible through color, surface, and form.

TECHNIQUE

Working on raw, unprimed canvas, I use diluted pigments, acrylics, and oil sticks to build layered surfaces through absorption and accumulation.
Color is embedded into the fabric rather than placed upon it, producing soft transitions, visible traces, and shifting depths. Each work develops through a balance of deliberate intervention and material response.
The process allows structure and spontaneity to coexist, reflecting the evolving relationship between geometry, organic growth, and surface.

WORKS

Geographies of the Living is an ongoing exploration of an ecosystem of forms shaped by the dialogue between organic growth and constructed space. The work develops through three interconnected bodies: Territories, centered on expansion and emergence; Enclosures, focused on structure and habitation; and Constellations, exploring relationships, networks, and coexistence. Together, they form a continuously evolving visual language.

ABOUT

Sarah Bontempo is a French artist living and working in Barcelona. Her practice explores the relationship between painting, material, and constructed form through raw canvas, pigment, and absorption-based processes.Working directly on unprimed cotton, she allows color to penetrate the fabric, creating images that emerge through accumulation, transparency, and material interaction.Recent works investigate organic geometries, shifting territories, and living structures. Suspended between painting and textile presence, each piece develops through a dialogue between intention and material behavior.Through repetition, restraint, and transformation, her work seeks a balance between structure and unpredictability, permanence and change.
